The evolution continues....These are photos of the first ever available hand-printed skateboard editions by Summer Soulsticks.
This is one the most inspiring projects I have ever been involved in and here is the documentation of its current progress. These skateboard decks are particularly special because they where proudly designed, created, and manufactured by the same people who have been riding them for years.
I have been collaborating with Rich Stubbs original designer, shaper and current owner of Summer Soulsticks for about 8 years to create and complete this vision. Together we aspired to develop this line of original hand-crafted skateboards with the most destinct style and unmatched ride ability not available anywhere else. The idea behind the graphic designs were made after many hours of brainstorming with Rich. Once we decided on some directions to explore I drew up some ideas of highly stylized yet timeless depictions of oceanic surf, and skate deitie hidden within the abstract forms used to define the boards graphics. Shapes from the Summer Soulsticks logo font where re-contextualized by compiling and modifying them to create the jump off point for the design of these alluring graphics.
By drawing the logo and graphic designs by hand before converting them into digital vector graphics it gave me an opportunity to get well acquainted with the shapes that I was working with. Equally important, the positive as well as the negative shapes where carefully designed in order to translate well into stencils. The first dozen boards where a combination of my spray-painted stencil work over deep vibrant wood stains. Although they looked really nice it was inevitable that we would have to venture into screen-printing soon after. The over sprayed look of the stenciled boards will be missed, but screen printing offers a more effective technique with exciting and very unique qualities onto itself as well as being the better healthier choice for the environment.

The two decks above are some of the earliest work I have done for Summer Soulsticks. They where painted with enamel spray paint through hand-cut stencils. This is the first generation version of the Phase 46 shape. This shape has been modified for the current editions.
